The Notes-to-Flashcards Problem
You have pages of notes. You know flashcards work. But actually converting notes to cards takes forever—and most people do it wrong.
Let's fix that.
Strategy 1: The Question Transformation
The Problem: Most notes are statements, not questions. Statements don't trigger active recall.
The Solution: Transform every key concept into a question.
Before (Statement)
"Mitochondria produce ATP through cellular respiration"
After (Question → Answer)
- Q: What is the primary function of mitochondria?
- A: Produce ATP through cellular respiration
How to Do It
For each important note, ask:
- What is this?
- Why does it happen?
- How does it work?
- When is it relevant?
Strategy 2: The One-Fact-Per-Card Rule
The Problem: Cards with too much information become impossible to review efficiently.
The Solution: One atomic fact per card.
Bad Card
Q: Explain the French Revolution A: The French Revolution (1789-1799) was a period of radical political and societal change in France. It began with the Estates General and ended with Napoleon's coup. Key events included the storming of the Bastille, the Declaration of the Rights of Man, the Reign of Terror, and the rise of Napoleon. Causes included financial crisis, Enlightenment ideas, and social inequality.
Good Cards (Split into Multiple)
- Q: When did the French Revolution occur? A: 1789-1799
- Q: What event marked the beginning of the French Revolution? A: Storming of the Bastille (July 14, 1789)
- Q: What was the Reign of Terror? A: Period of political violence (1793-1794) led by Robespierre
- Q: Name 3 causes of the French Revolution A: Financial crisis, Enlightenment ideas, social inequality
More cards, but each is reviewable in seconds.
Strategy 3: Use AI for the Heavy Lifting
The Problem: Manually converting 50 pages of notes takes days.
The Solution: Let AI do the conversion.
How It Works
- Upload notes (typed or photo of handwritten)
- AI identifies key concepts
- Generates question-answer pairs
- You edit and refine

What to Review
AI gets you 80% there. Spend your time:
- Editing unclear wording
- Adding personal mnemonics
- Removing irrelevant cards
- Adding missed concepts
Strategy 4: The Three-Pass Method
The Problem: You can't identify what's important until you understand the material.
The Solution: Three passes through your notes.
Pass 1: Understanding
Read through notes. Don't make cards yet. Just understand.
Pass 2: Identification
Mark concepts that are:
- Definitions (always card-worthy)
- Processes (how things work)
- Comparisons (X vs Y)
- Lists (components, causes, effects)
Pass 3: Conversion
Now create cards only from marked concepts. You'll create fewer, better cards.
Strategy 5: Context + Core + Connection
The Problem: Isolated facts are hard to remember.
The Solution: Build cards with context.
The Formula
- Context: Where does this fit?
- Core: What's the key fact?
- Connection: How does it relate to other concepts?
Example
Topic: Action potentials
Card with Context:
- Q: During an action potential, what happens when voltage-gated Na+ channels open?
- A: Sodium rushes in, causing rapid depolarization from -70mV to +30mV (the "rising phase")
The card includes when (during action potential), what (Na+ channels open), and effect (depolarization).
Quick Conversion Checklist
Before creating cards, ask:
- Is this a question, not a statement?
- Is there only one fact per card?
- Would I understand this card in 2 weeks?
- Is the answer short enough to check quickly?
- Does this connect to other concepts?
